In dit eerste deel komen we in aanraking met jonge kerels, die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zich inzetten om hun land te dienen. Eigenzinnige kerels ook die in Tunesie - en later Griekenland en de Ver. Staten - hun mannetje blijken te staan en heldendaden verrichten. Van binnenuit tekent de auteur de onderlinge rivaliteit en jaloezie - de afgunst van gelijken, meerderen en minderen, het vaak moeilijke opkomen voor jezelf, het met de nek aan kijken enz. Het is een boeiend boek geworden, waarin sfeervol de hoogste waarden van een mens ervaren worden door de lezer.
